Traditional vs Modern facial acupuncture: which one is best suited for you.

Here at the clinic, I offer two types of facial acupuncture that I have titled ‘’Modern’’ and ‘’Traditional’’. What are the differences and similarities for these treatments and what to consider before booking?

Both options use needles, usually fine gold needles, specifically targeting facial expression muscles. The needles help relax the over working muscles responsible for expression wrinkles and help tone the ones responsible for loss of tonus and sagging. But that’s not all there is. Needles are also working to improve blood and oxygen circulation, and promote lymphatic drainage for healthy looking skin (aka natural glow), even complexion and reduced puffiness. By creating localized micro trauma, acupuncture naturally boots fibroblasts rejuvenation, the cells responsible for collagen production, skin consistency and overall support.

Traditional Facial Acupuncture :

It may sound new to you, but facial acupuncture as been around almost as long as acupuncture itself. It was originally used by members of higher class, mostly females, to preserve a youthful appearance and reduce the signs of aging. A youthful looking skin was linked with good health and good genes, two things that were highly regarded and extremely important to build a strong dynasty. Geishas also resorted to facial treatments to maintain a desirable glow.

In the Traditional Facial Acupuncture treatment, I use silicone cups and jade gua sha after needles. Once the needles have been removed, I use an all natural, non allergenic facial oil to nourish the skin and prepare it for the cupping. I use motions like flash cupping and gliding to encourage lymphatique drainage, increase blood flow and reduce fascia adherence. This brings more oxygen and nutrients to the face and décolleté, helps detoxing and deeply relaxes facial muscles. I use the jade gua sha tools to complete the treatment with motions that lift, sculpt and smooth fine lines. It’s also an amazing scalp massage that will definitely take care of any lingering tensions or headache.

Best for :

If you suffer from bruxism or tensions headache, desire deep relaxation and love massage.

Best targeted area :

Décolleté area, cheekbones definition.

Not suited for :

If you have fine skin that can easily bruise or if you take blood thinners.

Modern Facial Acupuncture :

Even for things that has been tested and true, a little modernization never hurts. During a Modern Facial Acupuncture Treatment, high-end professional grade tools have replaced gua sha and cupping. You will benefit from Low Level Light technology along with the needles. Red light therapy helps reduce inflammation, promotes skin repair and boost fibroblast rejuvenation. Blue Light therapy helps kill bacterias responsible for common acne. Both settings are deeply relaxing and give the skin an immediate glow. If you would like to know more about low level light therapy, read the section about it on the blog. After the needles and light therapy, I use micro current to sculpt and tone the skin. I use micro current on two levels of frequency, long and short, to relax and tone each facial muscle group. Micro current is like a gym for the face, it helps produce more ATP to prevent sagging and maintain shape. Read more about micro current here.

Best for :

Rosacea, acne, deep cell rejuvenation, skin sagging.

Best target area :

Neck and ‘’double chin’’, jaw definition.

Not suited for :

If you have been recently diagnosed with an active skin cancer (as light therapy will rejuvenate all cells, without differentiation between healthy and non-healthy), if you have a peacemaker or cochlear implant.
